MAMARONECK, NEW YORK · WEST COURSE · EST. 1921

WINGED
FOOT.

The hardest examination in championship golf — six U.S. Opens, two winners under par, and the seventh already on the calendar.

01 COURSE ANTHEM

The only permitted
rebellion.

One track for the West Course. It is titled “F.U. Glory” — and it earns the name here. Engineered on the 3:1 tempo grid at 112 BPM: calm on the surface, defiant underneath, played at the volume this room permits.

02 THE 24/8 TEMPO SYSTEM

Structure survives pressure.

  • 24FRAMES BACK
  • 8FRAMES DOWN
  • 3:1IN TIME
  • 112BPM GRID

ONE SWING CYCLE · 0.80 S BACK / 0.27 S DOWN · DRAWN AT SYSTEM TEMPO

I — THE RATIO IS REAL

Frame-by-frame video of tour professionals — from Hogan to Nicklaus to Woods — shows elite swings share an elapsed-time signature: the backswing takes about three times as long as the downswing. Measured on 30 fps video, one of the canonical tour tempos is 24 frames back, 8 frames down.

JOHN NOVOSEL, TOUR TEMPO (DOUBLEDAY, 2004). A YALE PHYSICS STUDY (GROBER & CHOLEWICKI, 2006) FOUND THE SAME ~3:1 AVERAGE WITH CLUB SENSORS.

II — RHYTHM TRAINS TIMING

Peer-reviewed work found synchronized-metronome training improved golf shot accuracy — and decades of rhythmic-auditory-stimulation research show the motor system entrains to a beat.

SOMMER & RÖNNQVIST, J. SPORTS SCIENCE & MEDICINE (2009); THAUT ET AL., RHYTHMIC AUDITORY STIMULATION RESEARCH.

III — THE GRID

At 112 BPM, one beat lasts 0.536 seconds. A 24/8 swing sits on that grid almost perfectly: 1½ beats back, ½ beat down. The anthem is engineered so the pocket of the song is the pocket of the swing.

ARITHMETIC, NOT A LAB RESULT — 24 FRAMES ÷ 30 FPS = 0.80 S ≈ 1½ BEATS AT 112 BPM.

03 USE THIS ANTHEM FOR

Six admissible uses.

  • 01

    Pre-round priming

Set the tempo before the course sets it for you.

  • 02

    On-course focus

Narrow fairways reward a narrow mind. One target, one tempo.

  • 03

    Between-shots reset

The West punishes the last shot carried to the next. Walk it off at 112.

  • 04

    Recovery & composure

Bogey is a fair result here. Reset — don’t rescue.

  • 05

    Practice & preparation

Groove 24/8 on the range until the grid is yours.

  • 06

    Post-round reflection

Add up the card without flinching. The course already did.

04 THE GREEN

Where the examination
is graded.

Tillinghast raised the West’s greens into elevated, pear-shaped targets — false fronts that shed a timid approach, deep flanking bunkers pinching every angle. What follows is drawn as an engineer would file it: one archetype, in plan and section.

FIG. 04 — AN ARCHETYPE OF THE WEST’S GREENS, NOT A SPECIFIC HOLE. TRAITS PER THE RECORD: ELEVATED PEAR PLAN · FALSE FRONT · DEEP FLANKING BUNKERS.

THE CLUB, ON THE RECORD
FOUNDED
1921, by a group largely made up of New York Athletic Club members. Both courses opened in June 1923.
DESIGNER
A.W. Tillinghast — the West and the East, built concurrently on the 280-acre Mamaroneck property, fresh off his dual-course work at Baltusrol.
THE NAME
Taken from the winged foot of Mercury — the sculpture set into the lobby floor of the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.
THE INSTRUCTION
“Give us a man-sized course.” — the founders, hiring Tillinghast; as attributed by pgatour.com and golf.com.
THE WEST
Par 72, 7,426 yards from the club’s tips. Major championships are contested here.
RESTORATION
Gil Hanse, with the club — back nine 2016, front nine fall 2017 — expanding the greens back to their 1920s sizes, roughly 15–25% larger than for the 2006 U.S. Open, working from period photographs.
CHARACTER
Elevated, pear-shaped greens with severe false fronts; deep flanking bunkers that pinch approach angles; narrow, tree-lined fairways bordered by thick rough.
