THE SERIES CHAMPIONS RETREAT

EVANS, GEORGIA · 27 HOLES · THREE DESIGNERS

Champions
Retreat

“The only property in the world featuring individually designed courses by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player.” Three nines, three temperaments — and, uniquely in the 248 library, three anthems. One grid. Three keys.

COURSE ANTHEMS

One club. Three anthems.

Every other course in the library gets one walk-up song. Champions Retreat needs three — a movement for each designer’s nine, all engineered on the same 3:1 grid at 112 BPM. Play them in order, or jump to the nine you’re walking.

THE 24/8 TEMPO SYSTEM

Rhythm is structure.

112 BPM

ONE BEAT = 0.536 S · 1½ BEATS BACK · ½ BEAT DOWN

2.1The ratio is real.

Frame-by-frame video of tour professionals — from Hogan to Nicklaus to Woods — shows elite swings share an elapsed-time signature: the backswing takes about three times as long as the downswing. Measured on 30fps video, one of the canonical tour tempos is 24 frames back, 8 frames down.

John Novosel, Tour Tempo (Doubleday, 2004). A Yale physics study (Grober & Cholewicki, 2006) found the same ~3:1 average with club sensors.

2.2Rhythm trains timing.

Peer-reviewed work found synchronized-metronome training improved golf shot accuracy — and decades of rhythmic-auditory-stimulation research show the motor system entrains to a beat.

Sommer & Rönnqvist, J. Sports Science & Medicine (2009); Thaut et al., rhythmic auditory stimulation research.

2.3The grid.

At 112 BPM, one beat lasts 0.536 seconds. A 24/8 swing sits on that grid almost perfectly: 1½ beats back, ½ beat down. All three Champions Retreat anthems are engineered so the pocket of the song is the pocket of the swing — whichever nine you’re on.

That last part is arithmetic, not a lab result — 24 frames ÷ 30fps = 0.80 s ≈ 1½ beats at 112 BPM.

USE THIS ANTHEM FOR

Three movements, one routine.

  • 3.1

    Pre-round priming

Play the full triptych on the drive in — Island, Bluff, Creek — and arrive already on the grid.

  • 3.2

    On-course focus

Queue the movement for the nine you’re walking. The key changes; the tempo never does.

  • 3.3

    Between-shots reset

One chorus is enough to find 3:1 again after a loose swing.

  • 3.4

    Recovery & composure

The Creek movement is the widest, most forgiving of the three — breathe with it.

  • 3.5

    Practice & preparation

Range sessions at 112 BPM: 1½ beats back, ½ beat down, every ball.

  • 3.6

    Post-round reflection

Let the last movement play out. Three nines, one tempo, tomorrow’s round.

THE TRIPTYCH

Same grid. Three keys.

In 1999, at the Masters Champions Dinner, Gary Player recruited Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer to build one club together — each designing his own nine. It opened in 2005 on more than 365 acres of Georgia pines, hardwoods and wetlands along the Savannah River. Below, each nine in its own key — press play and the page changes key with the music.

ARNOLD PALMER · PAR 36 · 3,620 YDS

The Island

The gracious movement — a nine set between two rivers, with room to breathe and one oak asking the only question.

PAR-4 4TH · 453 YDS REPORTED · RIVER ONE SIDE, HAZARDS THE OTHER THE V-OAK, MID-FAIRWAY 3,620 YDS · PAR 36 ANWA COMPETITION NINE SAVANNAH RIVER → LITTLE RIVER → A FIVE-HOLE STRETCH ON A SECLUDED ISLAND ARTISTICALLY SHAPED BUNKERS · WIDER, MORE GRACIOUS FAIRWAYS
  • Set between two rivers — the Savannah on one side, the waters of the Little River on the other.
  • A scenic five-hole stretch plays onto a secluded island along the river.
  • Wider, more gracious in its fairways than the Bluff, with artistically shaped bunkers — challenge and serenity in one routing.
  • The signature par-4 4th: Savannah River down one side, hazards on the other, and a huge V-shaped oak standing mid-fairway as the key strategic element — reported at 453 yards.
  • With the Bluff, one of the two nines that stage ANWA competition rounds.

JACK NICKLAUS · PAR 36 · 3,710 YDS

The Bluff

The stern movement — the hilliest ground on the property, pines tight, ridges rising, nothing given.

3,710 YDS · PAR 36 ANWA COMPETITION NINE · LONGEST OF THE THREE LOBLOLLY PINE CORRIDORS FORESTED RIDGES — UP-AND-DOWNHILL PRONOUNCED DOGLEG · PRECISE DRIVE, UPHILL APPROACH
  • Built on the hilliest portion of the property — up-and-downhill golf with dramatic elevation changes.
  • Plays through corridors of enormous loblolly pines that narrow the fairways.
  • Climbs a series of forested ridges demanding precise drives and uphill approaches, with pronounced doglegs.
  • Regarded as the most challenging of the three nines.
  • Longest of the three from the championship tees, at a reported 3,710 yards.
  • With the Island, one of the two nines that stage ANWA competition rounds.

GARY PLAYER · PAR 36 · 3,598 YDS

The Creek

The open movement — wetland to hardwood, the widest way home, and a lake guarding the last green.

3,598 YDS · PAR 36 SHORTEST · THE NINE ANWA DOESN’T TOUCH WETLAND — HOLES 1–4 NATIVE HARDWOODS — UPLAND THE LAKE 9TH — OVER AND AROUND THE LAKE WIDE FAIRWAYS · LARGE GREENS — THE MOST FORGIVING NINE
  • The opening four holes play through a wetland; the remaining holes move upland through native hardwoods.
  • Player shaped it with wide fairways and large greens — the most forgiving of the three nines.
  • The 9th plays dramatically over and around a large lake on the right.
  • Shortest of the three from the championship tees, at a reported 3,598 yards.
  • The one nine not used in ANWA competition rounds.
